Athletic Dept. Announces Student-Athlete Awards
Six San Diego City College student-athletes received the annual athletic department awards, which were announced Thursday, including Ed Ruffa Sophomores of the Year Alina Fletes and Isaac Davis, James Swinson Scholar Athletes of the Year Joann Murray and Donald Loum, and Harry West Scholarship recipients Kareemah Hopkins and Dalton Kinney.

Ed Ruffa Sophomore Athletes of the Year
Alina Fletes played two years of indoor and beach volleyball for City and earned all-conference first team honors in both sports. She served as captain of both teams and helped lead the indoor team to the playoffs in her two seasons, while leading the state in total digs (654) in 2019. Fletes made it to the SoCal regionals with partner Kareemah Hopkins during the 2019 beach volleyball season. She was also successful in the classroom with a 3.5 GPA.
Isaac Davis earned all-conference honorable mention during his freshman year in 2017-18 while helping the men's basketball team reach the state championship game and, after a year away, came back to make the all-PCAC second team in 2019-20 while leading the Knights to the CCCAA sweet sixteen. He was the conference leader in total assists (182), which was also good enough for second most in the state. Davis earned a 3.4 GPA and received a full athletic scholarship to Vanguar University.
James Swinson Scholar-Athletes of the Year
Women's cross country runner Joann Murray came to the team as a "hobby jogger" in her mid-30s on the recommendation from one of her fitness classs instructors and ended up contributing as a top-7 runner for the Knights. She compteded at the SoCal regional meet two years in a row and helped the team rise from 5th to 3rd in the PCAC rankings. She earned state and conference scholar-athlete honors during her two years with a 3.95 GPA. Murray will be transferring to San Diego State to enter the pre-physical therapy program.
Men's soccer player Donald Loum accumulated a 4.0 GPA as a student-athlete the last two years, while maintaining a busy athletic schedule and a part-time job. He has been accepted to Stanford, UCLA, UCSD, and SDSU, but has not made a decision at the time of this posting. He plans to pursue a career in Political Science.
Harry West Scholarship Recipients
Women's Volleyball player Kareemah Hopkins made the all-PCAC first team in both her freshman and sophomore seasons for the indoor team, while helping the Knights to the playoffs in those two years. She was 15th in the state in total assists (826) and in assists per set (8.79) during the 2019 season. Hopkins made it to the SoCal regionals with partner Alina Fletes during the 2019 beach volleyball season. She is a Criminal Justice major with a 2.59 GPA and has been accepted to Coppin State University, Morgan State University, and Alabama A&M, but has not decided where she will transfer to at the time of this posting.
Men's soccer player Dalton Kinney was vital to the Knights defense in his two seasons with the Knights and earned PCAC Defender of the Year honors after the 2019 season while scoring six goals and dishing out three assists. He is a Business major with a 3.905 GPA and has received a scholarship to play at Point Loma Nazarene.
