Charlens Gets COY, Griffin Named POY

The Knights clinched a third straight PCAC championship with three games left in the season and then completed an undefeated season on Friday night with a 96-83 road win over Palomar. As a result, they received the conference's top accolades with Mitch Charlens being named PCAC Coach of the Year for the third season in a row and freshman Dylan Griffin being chosen as the PCAC Player of the Year.

Charlens now has a total of 10 PCAC Coach of the Year awards to go along with 10 conference championships in his 20 seasons at San Diego City College. His Knights, which finished 23-5 overall, have reached the 20-win mark 12 times and have qualified for the playoffs 15 times with four state quarterfinal appearances and a state championship victory in 2017.
Charlens has led the team to five PCAC undefeated seasons and has recorded 421 wins in his career, which includes 209 in confernce play. During this 3-year championship run, his Knights have lost only two of 48 games.
Dylan Griffin became the third consecutive Knight to be named conference Player of the Year and the 11th in the Charlens era.
He finished the regular season with the state's fourth highest scoring average at 20.7 points per game. With the Knights shorthanded due to multiple injuries, he picked up his level of play and scored over 20 points in 13 of the last 14 games, including a career-high 31 points on three different occasions.
Griffin recorded 11 double-doubles, seven of which came in the last 11 games.
He led the conference in rebounds (8.6 rpg), field goal percentage (55.9%) and steals (60). He was third in blocks with 32 and fourth in assists with 87.
Joining Griffin on the all-conference first team is Junior Camacho who also picked up his offense, scoring over 20 points in seven of the last 11 games to finish third in PCAC scoring with 16.6 points per game. He was fourth in assists with 83 (3.1 apg) and brought down 4.3 rebounds a ame.
Brickner scored in double figures in five of the last eight games with a season-high 17 points in a 102-97 win over MiraCosa.
Madadkar scored in double figures in six of the final nine games with a season-best 17 points in the final conference game at Palomar.
Amadi's season-high in points was also 17 in a win over Mesa on January 28. He scored in double figures in four of the last seven games.
Hyde missed the final 10 games because of injury, but still averaged 9.3 points on 55.0% shooting with 4.8 rebounds.
