The SDCC men's soccer team held the lead twice on Friday, but couldn't hang on as they suffered a 3-2 home loss to Southwestern in the PCAC opener.
The Knights, who had lost all seven games coming in to Friday's contest with Southwestern, got off to a great start by getting on the scoreboard first in the 14th minute. Erwin Hampton found Neftali Boroquez with a through ball near the top of the box that he put in for the early 1-0 lead.
Twenty minutes later, Southwestern's Ivan Lopez evened the game at 1-1 with a goal in the 34th minute on an assist by Hayden Segovia.
The combination of Hampton and Boroquez was successful once again at the start of the second half. Hampton found his teammate down the right side and Boroquez fired the ball in from 20 yards out to put the Knights ahead, 2-1, in the 47th minute.
The Knights had a great opportunity to add to their lead in the 54th minute when they earned a penalty kick after a foul in the box, but Dalton Kinney's shot was saved by Southwestern goalkeeper Jonathan Ledon.
Unfortunately for City, Southwestern's Francisco Moreno tied the game up again with a goal in the 60th minute. A minute later, while the Knights were trying to clear the ball out of their area, Southwestern's Anthony Mendoza intercepted a ball just outside the box and curled in a shot past City goalkeeper Sebastian Guillen for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
City had three great chances late in the game, but two of them were saved by defenders and the third by Ledon.
The Knights will be at home again on Tuesday against Mesa at 3 p.m.
