SAN DIEGO - The San Diego City College Athletics Department will host a ceremony at the school tennis courts on Thursday, October 27 at 2:00 p.m. to unveil a dedication plaque in honor of Ben Press and George Harbaugh, both longtime friends and ambassadors of San Diego tennis.
The George and Betty Harbaugh Charitable Foundation and the Greater San Diego City Tennis Council provided generous support of the campus tennis court renovation. With the help of these donors, San Diego City College now has six newly resurfaced tennis courts for use by the intercollegiate teams and exercise science classes, as well as for community events.
"With our improved facility, our coaches and instructors are hoping to attract more students at City to the game of tennis," said San Diego City College women's tennis head coach Jami Jones. "The dedication plaque at the new courts depicting the late Ben Press, San Diego's "Mr. Tennis," and philanthropist George Harbaugh will serve to inspire all of our students."
Press and Harbaugh grew up locally, were avid tennis players who graduated from San Diego High School and went on to successful careers.
The Greater San Diego City Tennis Council, which was co-founded by Press, has been repairing and resurfacing public tennis courts within San Diego County since 2001.
George Harbaugh created the foundation to ensure that his family's estate would give back to the community for many years.
"We are extremely fortunate to have the support of the Greater San Diego City Tennis Council and the George and Betty Harbaugh Charitable Foundation," said Jones. "With their help, we can continue to build successful tennis programs here at San Diego City College."
San Diego City College coaching staff, men's and women's tennis team members, athletics department administrators, and representatives of the George and Betty Harbaugh Charitable Foundation and the Greater San Diego Tennis Council will all be present to celebrate this special day.
