San Diego City had two runners ready for Friday's season opening meet, the Cuyamaca XC Kickoff, and they performed well despite the heat and humidity.
Emma Jeffress was the first Knight to finish the 2-mile course at Harry Griffen Park in La Mesa with a time of 16:02, which was good for 23rd overall.
Shannon Book completed the race in 18:03 (33rd) as she eases into her sophomore season.
It was a preview of the same course that will be used for the PCAC championship on October 24.
The Knights have three weeks off before their next race, the Golden West Central Park Classic in Huntington Beach.
