City Wins 7th Grossmont Tournament Championship!

San Diego City claimed the Grossmont tournament championship for the 7th time in the last nine seasons after defeating Palomar, 75-68, in Sunday's title game. Freshman Dylan Griffin was named tournament MVP and sophomore Junior Camacho joined Griffin on the all-tournament team. 

Griffin, who averaged 16.3 points and 7.0 rebounds in the three wins at the tournament, led the Knights in scoring in every game, including Sunday's final when he scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the second half despite being in foul trouble.

The Knights started the weekend off by pulling away from DeAnza in the final 10 minutes to go on to win, 72-62. Camacho had 14 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists, while Griffin added 17 points and seven boards. 

Their semifinal against Cypress was tight throughout and the Knights found themselves down by three with 2:31 remaining, but Camacho came up big down the stretch by sinking two free throws followed by a jumper to give City a 56-55 lead with just over a minute left. The Knights did not allow another point and hung on for the win.

In the title game against Palomar, Griffin was one of five Knights who scored in double figures. Camacho (12 points), Matin Madadkar (11 points), Santana Huff (10 points), and Cyprian Hyde (10 points) provided enough offense to get past the Comets.

The Knights, who played in their 10th straight Grossmont tourney championship game, also had a strong game defensively as they held Palomar to 33.3% shooting to capture the title. 

San Diego City has won six straight games since losing to West Valley and Yuba in the first week of the season. 

The Knights will play at No. 3 Fullerton on Friday at 6 p.m. and then will face No. 14 Saddleback on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Fullerton College.
